Facilitation skills training for the climate movement
One of our most powerful tools for building the climate justice movement is our ability to work well together, in ways that enhance collaboration, harness group wisdom, and ensure that all voices are heard and respected.
This training is for those who are committed to building the climate movement through empowering groups and communities to work together effectively and meaningfully. If you regularly run group meetings, facilitate team decision-making or planning processes, or engage in difficult conversations or challenging group dynamics, this training is for you.

Learn the art of effective facilitation & team leadership
Effective facilitation is the key to unlocking the potential of diverse groups. Skilled facilitators make complex processes easier and support the participation and emotional resilience of those around them.
This heavily subsidised training is designed for people actively engaged in the climate justice movement, particularly those who regularly work with groups or communities to achieve shared campaign goals.
Who is hosting the training?
Groupwork Centre Associates will be facilitating this training. Groupwork are internationally recognised as leaders in the field of facilitation education and training, having established this work in 1984. This 2 day course, derived from our Advanced Group Facilitation Program, is consistently booked out.
We give you a practical, well-framed approach to build skills, self-awareness and confidence.
We differ from most communications skills courses in our approach to emotional intelligence – what we prefer to call emotional resilience. Challenges can be handled much more effectively when you understand what holds you back as a facilitator.
This training is being supported by The Sunrise Project Australia. Driven by the imperative of climate justice, The Sunrise Project’s mission is to scale social movements to drive the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy as fast as possible.

In the words of our students…
“Unusually fun and enjoyable for a work training. Great environment!” (Freya)
“I loved that everything we were learning was being modeled by the facilitators - so we could see and feel it in action. The facilitators felt very genuine and I loved that they kept things light and easy - while teaching and sharing so much knowledge.” (Jane)
What will I learn?
During this two day course, we will cover:
Practical facilitation: group processes and the skills required to apply them
Understanding the essential principles of facilitation
Creating safety and welcoming difference to harness group wisdom
Gathering and pooling the wisdom of the group
Maximising participation
Developing greater self-awareness and emotional resilience in groups
Skills to make meetings work well
Capacity to manage hotspots and challenging conversations
Confidence to facilitate challenging group dynamics
This training is versatile and can be applied to a range of settings in the climate movement (and beyond!), including leading volunteer groups, hosting decision-making and strategy sessions, handling challenging conversations, and building emotional resilience.
This training is suitable for those new to facilitation as well as those who want to refresh their existing facilitation skills or learn new approaches.
The training is oriented towards your learning needs. We welcome your challenges and aspirations into the course. This provides an opportunity to practice your learning in situations most meaningful to you.
Facilitating is like swimming: you can’t learn without getting in the water – so our training is highly hands-on and experiential.
Am I eligible for this training?
This heavily subsidised training is designed for people actively engaged in the climate justice movement, particularly those who regularly work with groups, networks, or communities to achieve shared campaign goals.
This training is suitable for:
grassroots activists, community group leaders, and volunteers;
employed staff in not-for-profit climate advocacy organisations, in roles such as community organisers, mobilisers, and campaigners;
climate movement facilitators, educators, and trainers;
participants who are already connected or affiliated with a community group, organisation or campaign working towards climate justice.
“The facilitators were exceptional in: creating a safe, comfortable and chill environment, keeping to time, keeping the content understandable and achievable, clear instructions, allowing us to be human and diverse. I liked that the course wasn't simply, "here are a bunch of activities you can do", but rather focused on the self awareness and what we, as facilitators, can control and how we can work with ourselves to create that confidence to facilitate and feel good in the role. Also loved no handouts or PowerPoints!”
